Schools 'to be run' by the unruly...

"Vox populi vox dei" is a saying meaning that the voice of the people is the voice of God. As people get civilized, this trend also got refined and that is called democracy and the contrary is said to be mobocracy. Democracy is not absolute, but it is representative and such respresentative system is in place almost everywhere, even in the church called Parish Councils. But when the so-called leaders could not digest some of the legal proceedings they could instigate people and make them take recourse to mobocracy and that was what took place in one of our schools in connection with a transfer.
They forced the head of the school not to comply with the orders and when the transfering authority himself came, the crowd didn't give in, rather made a scene which could anytime go violent! Hence, he could only get back, though he could have very well sought the help of the police to implement his rightful orders. This went on even after the higher authorities interfered and gave specific orders to carry on with the orders issued. Almost after two weeks, the transfer was effected only to punish the head of the institute by closing the gate against her and she had to go back. And when the teachers expressed their solidarity with the head by not going to the class, the crowd, especially the leaders seemingly threatened them to get into the class.
Even the so-called secretary issued a notice the head not to allow the transferred teacher to join duty! And the poor teachers or the head were sufficiently feeling insecure to the extent that they expect step by step guidance from above! They seemingly don't know their constitutional powers! How to leave a class or school to such teachers who are almost threatened by such high handedness.
This trend has to change for the better running of the schools and for better results and well formed students with discipline and integrity.

Msgr. M. Joseph, our former Corporate Manager is no more...

Monsignor M. Joseph, a simple and unassuming priest of the Latin Archdiocese of Trivandrum breathed his last at about 1.30 a. m today at Jubilee Memorial Hospital after a considerable number of days there. He served our diocese in various capacities - as the parish priest of Pallithura at the time of sacrificing the church and rectory for the Indian Space Research, the TSSS Director, Jubilee Memorial Hospital Director, Cathedral Parish Priest, Vicar General, R. C. Schools' Corporate Manager, Marian Engineering College Manager and so on and so forth.

Let us remember this great soul and emulate his goodness and simplicity. Let us keep his memory alive by emulating the goodness and simplicity of his blessed life.

Hearty Condolences to his siblings and their children, the archdiocese and all who bereave his death.

Now, it is Anchuthengu School...

Our schools, one after another, are proving their calibre. Given necessary climate they can achieve still greater heights. St. Joseph's HSS, Anchuthengu has proven it in their limitted circle of Varkala Educational Sub-district by reaching fifth place scoring 100 points.
A notable achievement is by Master Jeevan Ram of +2 class in bagging the top slot in the Tamil verse recital competition. He recited a moving poem "Muthirkanni" of Vairamuthu from his best seller "Intha Pookkal Virpanaikkalla." He is the son of one of our teachers, Jessy Pereira, HM of the neighbouring St. Aloysious LPS, Mampally. Congratulations to the achievers and the school the teachers who trained them. Let this only be a beginning.

Symposium on RTE Act, 2010

The lately formed (Kerala Catholic) Teachers' Guild is organizing a Symposium as its premium programme of the landmark legislation on 'the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2010' on Wednesday, 1st Dec, 2010 at the Parish Hall, Vellayambalam. Mr. John Britto, a former Special Secretary, Law; Mr. George Varghese, former PSC member; and Mr. Elias John, a renowned TV personnel are presenting the Act, the draft report of Lida Jacob Commission, and the Community response to both respectively. It will be followed by a floor response and group discussion. The participants are the member of the Board of Education, the forane education co-ordinators,animators, Guild representatives, selected teachers from across the diocese, the PTA delegates and other stake holders.
This is intended to create an awareness and creative and critical collaboration in implementing it in the State. The Community must also be prepared to take its younger generation to the heights of growth and development in the ever growing and competetive global market in education.
We had already lost many a chance in the race to power and position and possession, due to the lack of education in the days gone. That should not be repeated and our younger generation should not blame their elders for not equiping them to face the challenges being thrown to them.

St. Aloysious LPS, Mampally

This little school in the hamlet of Mampally stood out in the recently held sub-district 'on the spot' work experience competition. Out of some 50 schools, nearly 30 of them competed. They carried away three first prizes, four second prizes and two third prizes. They achieved second place in the stall competitions. In the overall position they stood second.
Let us congratulate the winning children and their teachers who certainly might have been behind this achievement. Given necessary opportunities and needed encourgement, they will surely climb the ladders of life to make us all proud. Let us all work together to make them real achievers.

St. Mary's HSS, Vettucaud has done it! They came number one in the education sub-district competitions which had schools like the Holy Angels, Sarvodaya and so on. It is in Science Magazine and Project competitions. While congratulating those smart students and their teachers, parents and well wishers, let us strive to take our schools to the heights of fame with our performances in academic and other extra-curricular activities.

Compound Wall for St. Vincent's HS, Kaniyapuram...

This comparatively old school was without a compound wall around its almost 5 acres of land. Of this 5 acres nearly some 30 cents are missing, may be taken for the road on the south eastern side of the school. Now, when we could arrange funds for the construction of the wall, naturally poeple around came with claims for our land, including provision for road to their houses! When we could convince those claimants of their false claims and assure them of a way to their houses, the demand grew from pathway to auto rikshaw to car and now for a lorry! And this demand came from no one other than the one who lived from a job in this school and whose children and in-laws are still earning their livelihood from the school.
How come people desire for what is not theirs? It is one thing not to block their path, and entirely a different thing to grant land for such conveniences as to allow a lorry to pligh in that way! Why should they have that much convenience at some one's cost? No, such tendency should not be tolerated anymore.
The so-called non-Christians are better to this people and their greediness! This is even after discussing with all the people concerned and coming to an agreement with them. Now, it seems that they are moving with the help of the political party... A former member from the place of the party raising such unreasonable and greedy demand seems to pull the trigger with the aid of the one in the scene now! Anyhow, it can't be let go...
If the people around don't want any development, why should we strive for that? After all it is for their well being this much endeavour is made from the diocesan side. They need to protect it and nourish it...

St. Thomas Metro...

'St. Thomas Metro' is the name of the new venture of St. Thomas' HSS, Poonthura. It is a News Magazine by our students and teachers there. The very first issue came out today, 3rd November 2010. It will certainly help our students to get familiar with this fourth estate and make use of this powerful media for their growth and that of the community they belong along with our great nation. This will certainly inspire other schools elsewhere, especially the ones in our R. C. Management.

I do appreciate and congratulate the brain behind this great venture and all those who have contributed to it in various ways, especially the editorial team, the student journalists, artists and so on.

Education is more than learning the three 'R's. Let this only be a beginning.

To our teaching and non-teaching staff

* You are more than welcome to the R. C. Schools' Office; but not at the cost of your duty towards our students in your schools
* Being an office, be mindful of the work we are engaged in, the time factor and the others waiting for a chance like you
* Being a teacher or support staff, you should be able to manage your problems by yourself. More over we are here precisely to help you. Anybody else accompanying you to the office need not help you. So, better avoid that. If at all you come with any one, kindly ask them to wait out till you finish your business.
* After making your representation, preferably in writing, give us enough time to work on it and wait outside, if you can't make it for another day, to get your work done.
* Transparency being our watchword, we don't have anything to hide from you, nor from anyone else. However, your fellow staff may not like you to violate their privacy, say professional privacy. Let us respect it.
* Let us not forget that every right has an equivalent duty. So, let us do everything possible to do our duty before clamouring for our rights.
* Let us respect other's claims and wait patiently for our rightful chance.
* Let us ensure transparency for justice and equality.
* Feel free to register your suggestions and advice to enable us to serve you better for the empowering of our children through education for a better and enlightened future. Thank You!

Education in Kerala

Modern Education in the former Travancore State began with the Proclamation of 1844 by the Maharaja of Travancore that those educated in English school would be given preference in Public Service. Government established the Raja's Free School at Thiruvananthapuram as early as 1834 and it was the first school to import English education in the former Travancore State.

In the former Cochin State, the Govt. come in to the field 'of education in 1818 with the Proclamation, by which there established 33 Vernacular schools. The study of English language was helped by the missionary Rev. Dawson who opened on English school at Mattancherry in 1818. Thereafter, . English schools were opened at Thrissur, Thrippunithura and Ernakulam. In 1868, the first botch was presented for the Matriculation examination.

Later, the Elementary Education Act enabled the establishment of several Elementary schools and grant-in-aid was paid to Private schools by the District Educational Councils. From 1939 onwards, the disbursement of grant-in-aid to private schools was done by the District Educational Officers.
The progressive educational policies of enlightened rulers of the erstwhile states of Travancore and Cochin and the educational activities initiated by the Christian Missionaries and other social organizations yielded remarkable development in the field of education in the State even before Independence.

The Private Secondary School Scheme was introduced in Travancore-Cochin from 1st December 1951 onwards. Payment to the teachers of private schools was mace direct from the treasury from that date. Payment to non-teaching staff of private schools was mode by management till 31st June 1959.

During the year 1956-57, the enrolment of students was 2709271. It increased steadily and reached a maximum of 5901101 in 1990-91. There onwards the trend was reversed. The present enrolment is 4881585. The percentage of women to the total number of teachers significantly increased during the last five decades. It was 41% in 1956-57,50% in 1976-77 and 68% in 2002-03. There is a slight decrease in the drop out rate during the last 5 years, which is an encouraging feature.

Kerala is the most literate State in India. As per 2001 Census, the effective literacy rate was 90.92% while it was 89.81% in 1991. 78.85% in 1981. 69.75% in 1971 and 55.08% in 1961.

There is a Text Books Branch, which is responsible for arranging the printing, distribution, and the sale of all Textbooks, Teachers Hand books and Workbooks etc. under the Director of Public Instruction.

In accordance with the National Policy of Education (1986), District Institute of Education and Training (DIETs) were established In 14 districts of the State. The main function of DIETs is to provide academic and resource support at district level for the success of various program being undertaken in the field of primary and adult education.

The Vocational Higher Secondary Education was introduced In the State during 1983-84. It ~ designed to prepare skilled work force in the middle level in one or more group of occupations, trade or job after matriculation at 10+2 stage of Education. The objective of the course is to enhance individual employability to provide an alternative for those pursuing higher education without particular Interest or purpose.

Consistent with the National Policy of Education (1986), Government have decided to de-link Pre degree Courses from Colleges in a phased manner and to Introduce 10+2 system in High schools of Kerala. Accordingly, Higher Secondary Course was introduced during the year 1990-91 as a step for reorganizing the secondary and collegiate education. The above two courses are functioning in High Schools by upgrading the classes, but the Administrative control is vested with separate Directorates.

The District Primary Education Program (DPEP) introduced in the State during 1994-95 was discontinued and a new scheme - Sarva Siksha Abhliyan (SSA) has now been started to universalize Elementary education by community ownership of the school system.

The State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) was established in the year 1994 as an autonomous organization by reorganizing the State Institute of Education (SIE) to provide academic support to General Education in the State. The Director of SCERT is the head of the Organization. It has a general body with the Hon'ble Minister for Education as chairman. A governing body with Secretary to Govt.(Gen.Edn) as Chairman and the Director of Public Instruction as Vice-Chairman supervises the functioning of SCERT.

In brief, there were enormous expansion of educational facilities in the State since Independence. The development of Education over the years was tremendous.

Furnishing Basic Amenities...

The Honourable High Court of Kerala intervened in time to save the students who went all these days without the minimum amenities like drinking water, latrine and toilet facilities. In order to provide this in our schools, a meeting of the local managers of all our schools, the parish council secretaries, the education ministry convenor and the respective heads of the institutions were convened. An understanding to involve the diocese, the parish and the teachers in a three tier system evolved. This meant that the teachers also would be one of the parties and this need to be ensured by collecting 3% of the basic pay from all the staff working in our schools.

To implement this a team of nine teachers from the various sections of the schools were elected. Their names are:

1. Mr. Silvester J (Principal, St. Joseph's HSS, Anchuthengu)

2. Mr. Bernard Dettin (HM, St. Thomas' HSS, Poonthura)

3. Mr. Ignatius Thomas (HM, St. Mary's HSS, Vettucaud)

4. Mr. Cyril (HM, St. Joseph's LPS, Palayam)

5. Mr. Robert Joe ( HSST, Staff Secretary, HSS, St. Mary's HSS, Vettucaud)

6. Ms. Mary Pushpom (HM, Pallithura HSS)

7. Ms. Iyona Grace Paris (HM, St. Andrew's UPS, Chittattumukku)

8. Ms. Mary Fernandez (HSA, Staff Secretary, Pallithura HSS)

9. Ms. Jeeva (LPSA, St. Mary's LPS, Vizhinjam)

KRLCC Corporate Managers' Meet...

Yesterday (Monday, 27th Sept 2010) the Corporate Managers of the KRLCC was convened at Quilon bishop's house which the residence of the Education Chairman of the KRLCC and the KCBC. Managers from the following dioceses were present besides Bishop Stanley Roman, Fr. Stephen Kulakkayathil, the Secretary of the KRLCC and the Education Secretary Mr. Edward Edezheth.
1. Fr. Jacob Baiju Ben - Verapoly
2. Fr. Johnson Joseph - Punalur
3. Fr. Jose Raphael - Neyyatinkara
4. Pancretius - Trivandrum
One sister from Quilon was present representing the diocese.
It was an ordinary meeting seemed to be not that formal. After the bishop's introduction, all were asked to share their diocesan activities and other concerns.
I shared my concern about the alienated teachers who would otherwise have been used to empower our community like the Communist in the days past used this particular category for the spreading of their messages throughout the state. This was welcomed by the bishop and others.
Again i spoke of the approval of posts based on the 50:50 in the new divisions sanctioned by the department. When we were loosing many divisions and our teachers are on the street without a post, how can we employ the thrown outs from the government schools? In that case, it could be challenged in a court of law. This also was accepted.
Also, i suggested to bring all the teachers of the KRLCC dioceses under one programmes at some time. This was warmly welcomed and the bishop was enthusiastic and wanted us to organize such gatherings, if not all together, but at least regionwise.
The next meeting would preferably be in November or so and all the dioceses should be brought in and for that the venue could even be shifted to Ernakulam or so for the convenience of all.

Smart Classroom at St. Mary's HSS, Vettucaud

Today a smart classroom was set up at St. Mary's HSS, Vettucaud in the High School section. It is only a beginning. Slowly and steadily of course, we need to provide for the effective learning of our children in the modern times of IT explosion. Already two of the students of the same school have come out with a short film depicting the merits and demerits of mobile phones for the student community.

There seemed to be some trouble among the HSS teachers regarding the Exam (repeat) and the duty assigned to them! What a staff!

Visited St. Joseph's LPS, Kochuveli and spet some time with the children, especially the Kindergarten ones. Also went through the construction work of the new building. Fr. Richard D'Cruz also came there. Left in the rain to our St. Jacob's B. Ed College, Menamkulam for the Id Ul Fitr celebrations. There Dr. Asharaf of Islamic History Dept. of the Kerala University, Kariavattom Campus, was the chief guest and he delivered a good speech. After lunch left for Cheriathura via Kochuveli, Vettucaud and so on.

Ms. Lissy Innocent widowed...

Ms. Lissy Innocent, UPSA at St. Thomas' HSS, Poonthura lost her beloved husband JOHN BOSCO, 46 yesterday night. He was on some family matters when he collapsed on the way. His little son Job was with him at his final moments. The smart little child tried his best to help the suffering father by rushing home to reach the inhaler in time. By the time the child reached Bosco seemed to have collapsed. On reaching him to the hospital, he was declared dead! It must be a sudden and massive attack! May his good soul rest in Peace!
Bosco is survived by his beloved wife, Lissy Innocent, little children Job and Anne. It won't easy for them to cope up with this great loss for quite some time. This is the time they need our support most by way of prayer and presence. I was surprised to see not many of our teachers for the funeral at 4,30 p.m at Vettucaud church! May be that most of us have already visited and consoled Lissy teacher during the day.
Let us make it a point to be present at such moments of great loss and pain. That was what Jesus did when he came to grieved home of Martha and Mary at the loss of their beloved brother Lazarus. Jesus shared their grief by weeping with them. What more can we do than this consoling and comforting presence?
God needs people like us to comfort his children in trouble. Shall we be ready for that great cause? That is Jesus' way and that certainly is God's way too. While praying God to support Lissy teacher and children, let us allow ourselves to be used by God for this great cause. May the good God grant Bosco eternal rest and his family comfort, consolation and strength.

Student Film makers!

Congratulations Rinu and Joseya!
Education is not only learning alphabets and numerals. It is more than that and you too have proved that. Media today intrudes every aspects of our life whether is for good or bad. And you have come out to show those aspects of the media, especially the tiny instrument, mobile phone through your amateur film, “Puthu-thalamurayude Kalithozhan’ (Playmate of the New Generation).
This shows your inquisitiveness as well as creativity. Keep this spirit up and go ahead to achieve many more recognition and still more laurels for the benefit of the society at large.
We, your friends in the school, the teachers and management will be with you in your new and creative endeavours.
Let us make the media a mate and not a monster!
(Joseya Papachan and Rinu Franklin of Std. IX and XI are from St. Mary’s Higher Secondary School, Vettucaud, Thiruvananthapuram.)

The Already Ill famed...

Some 49 students of Std. X from St. Mary's HSS, Vettucaud went for a Picnic to Madurai - Kodaikkanal on 1st September. Three teachers, two non-teaching staff and a special teacher accompanied the students. On their trip two of the teachers seemingly misbehaved in the bus and was resented by the students. This was seemingly brought to the notice of the concerned two teachers, but they didn't take it serious. This was later reported to the HM through one of the parents of the students and it became a talk of the village to the extent that people were seemingly about to demand some action against the guilty teachers for the edification of everyone else concerned.
Again on 3rd September, there was a report in the dailies in Malayalam saying one of a teacher of a city school was victimized by a sex racket for money. The teacher was seemingly trapped by a mother of one of his students in the pretext of needing some urgent help. On arrival, he was surrounded by a gang who demanded lakhs of rupees from him. When he seemingly denied it, they gravely assaulted and battered him. Then took him to his house after extracting his credit cards and the pin code for taking his car. They threatened him to such an extent that he obliged like a child and got it for them. Only after they left him, he contacted the police and reported the matter. Fortunately the police caught the gang and the lady and they were remanded it seems. Now for this also people in the village make noise saying that the teacher is from our school!
Now the PTA for their part in collaboration with the parish are trying to have a meeting tomorrow to demand for some disciplinary action agains the two teachers, conveniently ignoring that none will be there at last to give evidence to implicate them and they most probably will escape after making a bad name for the school whose name is in no way better now!
